I'm Your Man - Review in Guelph / Mercury
Posted: 06-13-2008
DK IBOMEKA -- I'M YOUR MAN (WYCHWOOD PARK)
London, Ont.-bred DK Ibomeka is the size of a football lineman. But, as he demonstrated when he opened for Colin James at Centre in the Square in early 2007, he's a big man with a big, rich, bottom-of-the-barrel voice including a big, three-octave range.
Following on the heels of his 2006 debut release Love Stories, I'm Your Man features soulful renditions of such jazz standards as Our Love is Here to Stay, These Foolish Things and I Get Along Without You Very Well, along with jazz readings of God Bless This Child, I Put a Spell On You and, yes, Leonard Cohen's I'm Your Man.
George Koller, who handles bass, has assembled Ibomeka a stellar lineup of musicians including guest artist Pee Wee Ellis, Van Morrison's longtime band leader.
The son of Nigerian immigrants, Ibomeka is well on his way to the front ranks of Canadian jazz.
He appears July 11 at the 16th annual Uptown Waterloo Jazz Festival.
